ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

RIGOROUS PERMIT PROCESS

Achieving the very highest standards of environmental protection is core to the NJEDA’s delivery of the NJWP and will remain a core focus for the NJWP’s ongoing operation.

The NJWP has undergone a rigorous federal, state and local permitting process. NJEDA is strictly abiding by all terms of its permits, including:

  • Providing mitigation for unavoidable wetland, water, natural resource, and cultural resource impacts for a water dependent use
  • Maintaining erosion and sediment controls
  • Periodic reporting to federal permit agencies on vessel traffic and forecast traffic

MINIMIZING STURGEON IMPACTS

NJEDA has also implemented a series of measures to limit impacts to sturgeon and other migratory fish in the Delaware River. This includes:

  • Suspension of in-water works between March and June each year when sturgeon are most likely present in the area
  • Side scan surveys to identify the presence of sturgeon
  • Soft start techniques to encourage fish to move out of the work area
  • By taking these proactive steps, NJEDA is confident that there will be minimal impacts to the Atlantic Sturgeon during the NJWP’s construction and operation

BENEFICIAL USE

The NJWP is also helping to restore degraded or lost coastal wetland resources along the Delaware through the beneficial use of dredge materials. These beneficial use projects will aide in climate change resiliency by providing flood protection for existing coastal communities while also enhancing critical habitat for threatened, endangered species and wetland habitat.

CULTURAL RESOURCES

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has created and installed interpretive signage at the Abbotts Meadow Wildlife Area highlighting the history, architecture, and cultural landscape of the area. The NJEDA recognizes the importance of the area’s unique historic and cultural landscape and seeks to preserve and promote it. In connection with the New Jersey Wind Port development and in consultation with the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, NJEDA has provided interpretive signage along the Abbotts Meadow Wildlife Area trails to honor the area’s distinctive early vernacular architecture, agricultural practices, and cultural history.
